2007 CA Duck Season

Nov 28th @ Yolo...In our face...

Every second counts when on a public land outing.  Had we not hustled to "The Spot" this morning, the shoot never would have worked out the way it did.  This was my singe most successful day hunting Yolo.  I have taken numerous limits of mallard, and taken my fair share of Specklebelly Geese; but never have I taken a full limit of ducks and geese at Yolo Refuge.  It was a great shoot with my brother Dave.

Tons of Fog... No Ducks

Today was an interesting day due to a healthy amount of fog.  I was too far from the refuge closed zone to get the normally curious, and lost mallard to come through my decoys.  I settled in an open water pond, and gave it my best shot.  These guys fell for the old hen mallard "come and get me" call of mine.

Nov14th @ Yolo

A solo hunt to remember...

As a duck hunter, I look forward to the last hour before sunrise.  The anticipation of the days hunt, and how it will all unfold.  This morning was no different from any other on the marsh.  There were hundreds of ducks in the pond I was set up in, and it really got my hopes up that this day would be another one of "The Greats".  Opening shoot came too quickly, and so did my limit of ducks.  I had 7 ducks on the water with 8 shots before I knew it.  I pulled two doubles, and barely had time to reload before the next group of ducks buzzed me.

Colusa Refuge it is...

Colusa Refuge It Is...

We set off for my maiden voyage at Colusa Refuge.  It was real...it was fun...  That's all I have to say about that.  It's nice to watch someone else shoot a ton of shells at birds.  It's even nicer to shoot your own shells at birds.  We found "The Spot" for next time, but missed by a few hundred yards this time.

North Wind at Yolo

2nd North Wind of the Season

Well folks, this is the 2nd time the North wind has blown this duck season.  I have hunted both of them at Yolo.  I'm fine with that...  I didn't get into the refuge until 1:00pm, and I only brought 10 3 1/2" BBB's.  I was so far from the truck I couldn't turn around to get more shells, so I just had a nail-biter of a hunt.  Every shot had to count, and I made sure they did.  I got 6 ducks with 7 shots, only because I had to shoot one duck twice.  The other three shots were waisted on snow geese that were to the side, and a bit too far....aparently.

Yolo Outing-Nov7th

Another day off...

All duck hunters take days off from work during the season.  It's a fact of life that when the weather man says there's going to be fog; it's time to ask for the day off.  This day was no different except that there was NO FOG.  It didn't get me down though.  Bill and I still gave-it-a-go at Yolo.  In spite of there being no birds on the refuge and very few in the closed zone, our persistance was rewarded.

Yolo... early season.

Another Yolo Wildlife Outing

Let's just call this a spoony shoot and be done with it.

2k7 CA Duck Season Opener

The 2k7 CA Duck season is well under way, and the opener was nothing short of amazing.  I hunted with Aaron (6 yrs old) and Jalen (7 yrs old).  We were only standing in the water for and hour and a half before we had seven ducks down and retrieved.  The boys called all of the ducks in for me.  I had the easy part.  Point, and click!

2k7 Day two Duck Slaying

Day two was a jaw dropper!  Nothing more needs to be said except...  quack...point...bang...  The ducks were everywhere in the North wind, and I was able to pick out 3 mallard 4 gadwall and a couple of cacklers.  Nice shoot.  I went it alone though.

1st Kayak Duck Hunt of '07

I decided to take a couple of hours and paddle for some ducks.  I have been hunting out of my kayaks for 10 years now, and feel very confident when hunting out of them.  I was using the Wilderness Systems Pungo today, and it performed flawlessly.

As you can see, the picture is of me, the boat and 6 ducks.  Yeah... I'm one short of a limit.  I did shoot a limit, though.  This is one of those "my dog ate my homework stories".  In this case it was "a HAWK ate my hen greenwing teal"!!!  I couldn't believe it either.  The greenwing jumped up and flew directly away from me, and I smoked her at 40 yards.  Just as she was hitting the water a hawk swooped down and grabbed her.  The hawk took the duck to the levee a mere 50 yards from me.  I could have got my duck back, but I knew that hawk must be starving to death in order to be so brazen as to fly down through gunfire to steal a teal.  So, I ended up with 6 ducks in the bag.
